Lorena ISD would like to make you aware of two upcoming opportunities for you to get a heart screening for your student-athlete, marching band, cheer or dance team member.

 

On August 3rd, 2019, Waco Cardiology Associates, 7125 Sanger Avenue, will be offering free heart screenings for children ages 14-18, from 9:00-12 noon (click here for more information about how to register your child). This screening will include an echocardiogram (picture of the heart) to detect possible genetic conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

 

On September 20th, Lorena ISD is planning to offer an opportunity for student-athletes, marching band, cheer and drill team members to participate in a free heart screening provided by the Cody Stephens Foundation (www.codystephensfoundation.org) which will consist of a 12-Lead ECG read by cardiologists. This non-invasive screening will be held at the middle school and high school campuses and more information and consent forms will be sent out to parents as the date nears. Nurse Fulton and Nurse Beyer will be coordinating this event. (More information will be coming!)

 

Both of these screenings are excellent opportunities for parents to have your child’s heart screened beyond what is done at a routine physical. These screenings are designed to evaluate the potential risk of sudden death from a cardiac-related abnormality. We encourage parents to take advantage of both of these opportunities!
