LHS students named Gold Key Winners

Lorena High School students Anne Berry and Aislinn Webb were both recognized as Gold Key winners in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Berry received Gold Key recognition for a mixed media art piece. Webb received Gold Key recognition in the poetry category. This is the highest level of achievement at the regional level which included submissions from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Berry and Webb will have their work entered into the National Awards judging in New York City.

Only 7-10% of all regional submissions receive Gold Key recognition. Both Berry and Webb were surprised to receive the honor. “Obviously it’s a pretty big award so I was really surprised,” Barry said. “I entered it just because Mrs. Sciacca asked me to put a piece in and I was like okay, might as well. I was really surprised that this won. I didn’t realize it was going to get such a good award.” Webb said, “I didn’t believe it at all. I thought I had no chance whatsoever, and I saw that it said Gold Key, and I think I told my mom, I was like are we sure that’s right, and then I saw the certificate, and I was like no that’s my name. I did not believe it.”

This is the second year in a row for Lorena High School to have a Gold Key winner.
